WHO WE TREAT

Adults

Aruba Clinical Services offers many different mental health services for adults. We will recommend and customize your treatment plan. People come to us for many reasons. Commonly, we see people who have experienced trauma, feel unhappy, anxious, depressed, struggling with substance abuse or just plain stuck in a rut. Sometimes there is an underlying mood, anxiety or cognitive disorder that has made life inexplicably difficult. Often, people have a combination of issues.

Children & Teens

Growth, at any age, can be challenging. Since children and teens are literally in the throes of growth, they face many new experiences and feelings each year, month, and day! This rapid change, when accompanied by emotional and behavioral struggles, can be especially difficult to navigate. Our goal is to help children and teens identify what is troubling them, get to the root of the issue, and develop strategies that will help them cope and feel better, and reach their full potential. We use treatments based in science with clear track records of success.

Parents

We help parents navigate the roller coaster of parenting. We know parenting can be exhilaratingly fun and horribly terrifying! Each stage of your child’s development brings new challenges. At Aruba Clinical Services, our goal is to identify issues and teach parents the skills to reduce the number of stressful parent and child interactions.

Families

Everyone knows that family relationships can be complicated. Aruba Clinical Services’ goal is to help families; identify issues, understand dynamics, improve communication, reduce conflict, and create healthier relationships through empathy, understanding and love.

Couples

All relationships have their ups and downs. When the downs outweigh the ups, couples may benefit from therapy. Working with a neutral therapist, to help uncover issues, address feelings, and find solutions can help couples strengthen communication, connections, and function better in their relationships.

WOMEN’S MENTAL HEALTH

ACS is dedicated to women’s mental health concerns. Research shows that women are prone to different mental health concerns than men. We focus on the identification and treatments that specifically address women’s needs.

LGBTQ

The LGBTQ community is prone to a unique set of mental health challenges, based on sexual and gender identities. Sadly, stigmas, prejudices, biases, and discrimination exist and can cause complex issues best addressed by LGBTQ-focused mental health experts.

Expertise in Severe and Persistent Mental Illness

Severe and Persistent Mental Illness (SPMI) is defined as people suffering from a prolonged or recurrent mental illness, who are impaired in activities of daily living and who require long-term treatment. Despite common misperceptions, having an SMI is not a choice, a weakness, or a character flaw. It is not something that just “passes” or can be “snapped out of” with willpower. The specific causes are unknown, but various factors can increase someone’s risk for mental illness including, family history, brain chemistry, and significant life events such as experiencing a trauma or death of a loved one.

Dr. Kan was previously at an inpatient facility for three years where she worked closely with a wide spectrum of seriously mentally ill clients who varied in acuity with some being highly symptomatic and others more stable. These clients also exhibited a variety of challenging behaviors that became targets for treatment. These included aggression, self-injury, sexually inappropriate behavior, polydipsia, and adaptive functioning deficits.

Expertise in First Episode Psychosis

Psychosis consists of disturbances in a person’s thoughts and perceptions that cause the sufferer to lose the ability to distinguish between what is real and what is not real. It is not an illness of its own – psychosis is a symptom that can occur in people with several types of mental illnesses, physical diseases, and substance abuse disorders. A person experiencing psychosis may see or hear things that aren’t there (hallucinations) or have persistent, abnormal thoughts or beliefs. Individuals may feel they are in danger, or are being monitored or followed, all based on imaginary ideas (delusions). Thinking may become disrupted, disorganized, and illogical. Psychosis can cause great distress to the person suffering – and to the individual’s family and friends.

Assessments

Aruba Clinical Services provides comprehensive or abbreviated psychological evaluations for children, youths, and adults. This includes but are not limited to cognitive, achievement, neuropsychological, emotional and personality testing. Assessments provide in-depth information on an individual’s functioning, it is also useful in understanding what a person is thinking and feeling, the underlying personality structure, cognitive strengths, limitations, coping skills, weaknesses, and why a person behaves as he/she does. In clinically complex cases and/or cases in which it is difficult for a person to get in touch with what the problem is or articulate what he/she is experiencing, a full psychological evaluation can be an invaluable resource for providing diagnostic clarification and treatment recommendations. After the assessment, you will be provided with feedback and a written report, including clear recommendations targeted toward your specific needs.

SPECIALIZED SERVICES

Aruba Clinical Services additionally helps assess functioning related to parenting, career, suicidality, and legal issues.

Dr. Kan previously worked in the United States with a variety of forensic clients. Dr. Kan is further qualified to provide multiple specialized forensic treatments such as Sex Offender Treatment, Court Mandated Treatment, Substance Abuse Treatment, and additional treatment modalities to reduce recidivism.

Crisis Intervention Services include assessments, counseling, screening, and referral services.
